Over 50? You Shouldn’t Wear That!

If you’re over 50, you may have read things saying you shouldn’t wear this or that item of clothing, a certain makeup, or hairstyle. How about if we tell those well-meaning (jealous?) critics where they can put their advice?

Say what? Have you ever seen them? Magazine articles that scream at you…”women over 50 should not wear their hair below the shoulders.”

You Shouldn’t Wear That

Don’t wear mini skirts, high heels, tank tops, skinny jeans, bright colors, pale colors, neutral colors…God, what the heck can we wear?

“Never wear blue eye shadow if you’re over 50.” (Well, possibly this one…perhaps no one should wear blue eye shadow!).

We may all agree that certain women of ANY age shouldn’t wear miniskirts or tank tops, or “skinny” jeans, etc. But it doesn’t have anything to do with how old they are!

Examples of Stylish Women Over 50

For instance, have you seen Christie Brinkley? She is SIXTY-SIX years old. She looks better than most women in their 20’s and 30’s. Yes, she has $$ and lots of time to workout, plus eat the best food, probably cooked for her.

Maybe she has great genes (and jeans), and all sorts of other benefits that many women will never have. We’re not all blessed with sensational looks, and that’s not really even the point of this post.

The point is, there aren’t any rules that “they” can tell you about what you can or can’t wear after 40 or 50 or 60. Helen Mirren is 74 and she looks fabulous too.

Then there’s the 63 (now 66) year old professor, Lyn Slater who was mistaken for a model, and now she IS a model! She looks amazing too. And all of these women aren’t drop-dead gorgeous like Brinkley. But they look stunning and confident and put together.

Long Hair Over 50?

I happen to have (very) long hair and I’m 63 (in 2020). Many well-meaning articles tell women over a certain age that long air will age them (see above re: Christie Brinkley).

But if you like it, go for it (or stay with it)!

I think the woman above in the picture looks just wonderful, and her hair does not detract from her soft good looks at all.

And then there’s the short skirt or dress command. Check out this picture of Christine Baranski in a short dress she wore for some awards ceremony.

Her legs look great! She was over 60 in that picture. I do not understand why anyone would criticize this, but the caption below the picture on theworldofcelebrity.com says,

“Itā€™s not the dress that bothers me but Christine just didnā€™t pick something age appropriate. A 60-year-old shouldnā€™t really be wearing something that short with sequins!”

Well, bah humbug on that. Who died and made this critic some expert on who should wear what, and at what age?

I’ll bet she couldn’t rock a short dress like Baranski does.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t wear clothing appropriate to the occasion, or that we should throw on dirty sweat pants or go out with hair looking like a rat’s nest.

You should take pride in your clothing and appearance, but wear whatever makes you feel attractive (whatever that means to you), comfortable, and even sexy, if that’s what you’re going for.

Remember It’s Your Thoughts That Determine Your Feelings

If someone criticizes you for it, smile and go on with your life. It’s about them, not about you. That’s the important thing to keep in mind.

Become someone who can hear the comments but not let them affect your mind, or how you feel about yourself. You cannot control what other people think or say, but you can certainly control your thoughts about it!

Because let’s face it, it’s our thoughts that cause our feelings, it’s not what someone says…just your THOUGHT about what they say.

The bottom line? Wear what makes you happy. šŸ™‚
